Both productions were selected for and praised at a number of festivals, including the Rome Film Festival, goEast (Wiesbaden), Arras Film Festival, Göteborg IFF, Vilnius International Film Festival, Karlovy Vary – Variety Critics’ Choice, MoMA New Directors / New Films, Crossing Europe Film Festival, Jerusalem International Film Festival, CinePécs Moveast International Film Festival, and Cambridge Film Festival.

Before making his feature film debut, Andrei Gruzsniczki worked as an assistant director on two of Lucian Pintilie’s films and directed and wrote the scripts for several short films and television productions.

Director’s Note

Zavera is the old Romanian word for ‘uprising’, closely related to its Serbian and Croatian homonym ‘zavjera’, which means ‘conspiracy’. This film will be an observational cinema that records facts and experiences. The story permanently vacillates between the past and the present, bringing into a discussion on how elements and decisions in the past decisively interfere with the present. It is a story about a society that has normalized so many things it can no longer tell what’s abnormal.
