Synopsis
On the night before Easter, a priest has to bring the Holy Fire to its rural church. The closer he gets to the destination, the darker the night becomes.
Director’s Biography
Andrei Epure was born in 1989 in Romania. In 2015, he graduated in Screenwriting and Film Studies from the National University of Theatre and Film in Bucharest. Since then he has collaborated with various directors in writing their features. In 2019, he has considered directing his own projects, starting with MAYBE DARKNESS WILL COVER ME. His second short film INTERCOM 15 premiered at Semaine de la Critique – Cannes in 2021. Andrei is now in post-production with his first feature DON’T LET ME DIE, which was developed at La Résidence du Festival de Cannes and Next Step – Semaine de la Critique.
DIRECTOR’S NOTE
I wake up almost every day feeling vaguely scared of a distant threat. I can’t see it, but I can feel its presence. In order to get out of my carefully designed safe space, I tend to invent ways that can lighten this feeling of fear. I assure myself by investing objects, people and events with some sort of a subjective narrative. Everything becomes a myth of self-assurance.
The greatest fear might be the fear of death. Religion, the magnum opus of semiotic systems, deals with this strange sensation by trying to soften the dread of existence. Of course, we set for ourselves some sort of tests and we punish ourselves if we don’t pass them. I imagine that religion can take many forms. I think everybody has some sort of belief systems that tremble each time we meet the unknown.
“MAYBE DARKNESS WILL COVER ME” is a commentary created in the vapor of these ideas.
